Some Douglas Baptist Church History

  • The Douglas Baptist Church was a daughter of the older Free Baptist Church of Keswick. It is reported that Sunday School and Sunday services were held in the Douglas Community Hall. Rev. J.E. Reud pastored in Douglas up to 1888. The Baptist yearbook gives the date of organization as 1880.
  • The first church was built in 1901.
  • Improvements to the church were made: steel sheathing added to walls and ceiling in 1905; a steeple added in 1917-18; electric lights installed in 1933; basement added for Sunday School rooms and furnace as well as new walls and ceiling in 1948-51.
  • Land was purchased in 1961, basement enlarged and church moved on to it.
  • 1967 saw the present sanctuary built and dedicated on March 12.
  • Douglas left the field in 1973 because of the growing need for a full-time pastor.
  • The addition of Sunday School rooms and foyer was built to accommodate a growing church. It was dedicated on June 5, 1994.
  • 2008 marks a significant expansion in the church building including additional meeting rooms and a gymnasium.
