Pay Attention

"Pay Attention!"

Not sure if you have ever heard those words before but I have. I had a teacher once who often said that in class. I must admit she probably directed that comment my way a time or two. I found it hard to stay focused in that class, even to keep my eyes open some days!

Paying attention is not always easy. Staying focused in a world full of distractions is a challenge. Not sure about you but sometimes when I set aside time to pray I get distracted, lose focus and yes sometimes it is even hard to keep my eyes open.

Whatever the reason and their are many, distractions are something we must overcome if we want to grow in our relationship with God and engage in meaningful times of prayer.

This past Sunday (during our service at DBC) I mentioned that "Prayer is turning our attention to God." This morning I began reading a new book (don't worry I only did so after finishing another). In her book, I Told the Mountain to Move, Patricia Raybon writes:

The more I focused on God, in fact, the less I worried about my household's ongoing and never-ending dramas and irritations and problems.

That seemed to be a big prayer principle: Magnify God. Make him bigger than any problem by focusing not on the problem but on him.

Then pay attention while he told me what to do and how to pray.

All kinds of lessons for me in just these few lines. Lessons that line up with what I see in scripture and what I have experienced in life!

Lord, help me to pay attention to you, get my eyes off myself and magnify your name!
